Aesthetically Pleasing: Dark Academia

Welcome to Aesthetically Pleasing, the segment on my blog where we do a mini dive into some of the different aesthetics that are popular on the interwebs. Today’s aesthetic; Dark Academia

Dark Academia is the romanticism of english literature, vintage books, passion for knowledge, and has a historic feel to it. It tends to lend itself to Eurocentrism. This particular aesthetic has (as of lately) been viewed as negative, seeming to have elitist views and unhealthy behaviors such as choosing studying over sleep, human interaction, and hygiene. When thinking about this style, I think of “Pride and Prejudice” or “Little Women”. It makes me want to drink a coffee in an old dusty library surrounded by my favorite books, or sit in an art history museum with a journal and soak up new knowledge.

This Aesthetic is my personal favorite. Plaid dress pants, coats, or skirts, turtlenecks and vintage sweaters in dark muted browns, greys, or blacks are usually in the wardrobe of someone who practices this aesthetic. Someone who wears this aesthetic usually looks like a classy grandma or an english professor, or both. I have personally found a lot of my pieces at thrift stores, more specifically, thrift stores in areas with higher property values (the reason for this is that old rich people donate their old clothes to their closest goodwill more often than they sell them)

Another important aspect to Dark Academia is accessories. Gold or bronze jewelry, vintage watches, a good pair of glasses, a satchel, and some oxfords. Most importantly, in order to achieve true Dark Academia, you cannot be seen without a good vintage book.
